The Governor of Qalyubia, Hossam Abdel Fattah, has sparked widespread controversy after footage of him publicly chastising school principals during surprise pre-term inspections went viral.
In one video from an elementary school in Kafr Shukr, the governor accused Principal Nader Ali of ‘neglect and irresponsibility’ over dusty classrooms before removing him from his post for poor preparation and wearing casual attire.
During a separate inspection, the governor criticised Principal Salha Abdel over degraded facilities. When she explained that staff had been funding maintenance out of pocket, the governor publicly questioned her account.
The principal then produced receipts demonstrating that she and her colleagues had spent roughly EGP18,000 (approx. BD140) of personal funds on repairs after official funding requests went unanswered.
Egypt’s Teachers Syndicate issued a statement condemning the governor's actions, emphasising that respect for educators' dignity is non-negotiable and that administrative issues should not be filmed for publicity. Social media users have similarly rallied behind the educators, pointing to systemic funding failures.
