A passenger on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi broke the emergency exit window panel and attempted to open the emergency exit door while in mid-air on Wednesday night.
Jamsheer Athanikkal, 36, from Palakkad, was arrested after a complaint by the security head at Batik Air in Kochi airport.
The incident occurred during a Batik Air flight between 9.30pm and 11pm. Jamsheer, seated in 12A, tried to open the emergency exit without provocation and threatened fellow passengers and crew who intervened before he was subdued.
He faces charges of criminal intimidation, failing to comply with safety regulations, and risking public safety.
The cabin crew have returned to Malaysia, and their statements will be taken later.
Police are also considering charges under the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Civil Aviation.
Jamsheer did not provide any specific reason for his actions but stated he felt like doing it. He mentioned he was returning home to see his newborn. Police will seek his custody for further questioning.
